Fleet Street Training’s Arti Halai has been working with TV presenters from across the Middle East after spending ten days training for Aljazeera in Qatar.
FST, which is part of the Fleet Street Group based in Birmingham’s Fleet Street, was asked by the Thomson Foundation to design and deliver two TV talk show presenter’s courses at beginners and advanced level for a total of fourteen students from across the region.
The former Central TV presenter said: “Working with a translator teaches you to become clearer in your thoughts and succinct in the language you use. You also quickly learn that metaphors don’t translate very well.”
With students coming from Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Qatar, Fleet Street Training devised a series of studio exercises with topics covering a range of areas from the Arab Spring, politics and the role of women to social issues and the impact of the World Cup which will be held in Qatar in 2022.
The training took place at the new purpose built Aljazeera’s media training and development centre in Doha. The centre sits next to the two big network stations, Aljazeera – Arabic and Aljazeera – English, where the trainees have the opportunity to go for a tour and see the real live newsrooms in operation.
