A Midland couple who were made redundant have put their skills to work by setting up their own vehicle servicing business.
Emma Young and Stephen Mays are the driving force behind E & S Van and Car Service Centre at the Parkway Business Park in Wednesbury.
They have taken a 9,484 sq ft unit on the estate, which is owned and managed by London and Cambridge Properties (LCP).
The business is due to open on September 6 and will employ seven people initially. It has room to expand as it builds its customer base.
Ms Young said: “I used to run a van centre for a main dealer until it was closed and I was made redundant.
“However I kept in contact with my previous customers and I knew I could provide a niche business that gave them the service they needed.
“Van drivers’ vehicles are their workhorses and they cannot be without them for lengthy periods.
“And if they have to use replacement vehicles it takes time to transfer their tools to the temporary vehicle and back to their own again after servicing.
“In our new centre we can offer a more flexible, customer-focused approach. We will be able to provide quicker turnaround times and even a ‘while-you-wait’ service where possible.”
The business will work for example with ambulance stations for their safety checks and carry out MOTs on class four – cars and light vans – and class seven – long wheel-based vans vehicles and, in the future, class five vehicles with more than 13 passenger seats.
The two company directors have established contacts with fleet management operators who work with leasing companies which provide vehicles to major businesses.
Their centre will offer the lease drivers an alternative to main dealers.
Ms Young added: “We have the experience and know-how and we’re very excited about making a success of our own business.
“We chose Parkway because we wanted somewhere in the area which had easy motorway and main road access. The estate has everything we need and we have enough space to enable us to expand.”
LCP bought the estate last year to add to its substantial holdings in the region and expand the range of accommodation it can offer.
Black Country-based LCP is one of the UK’s largest private owners of industrial and retail property.
Its total commercial property portfolio runs to 14 million sq ft which is held for long term investment purposes in the future.
