A new supermarket in Solihull town centre is set to open its doors later this year.

Solihull Council had approved plans to build an Aldi store, on the site of the former Magistrates Court, in October last year.

Hoardings had gone up around the Homer Road site before Christmas and the budget chain confirmed this week that preliminary work is now underway.

The scheme will see the former court house demolished to make way for a purpose-built store and 81 space car park. It is expected to welcome customers towards the end of 2019.

An Aldi spokesman said: "This will create up to 40 full and part-time local jobs, and enable local people to shop and save closer to home."

The magistrates had been mothballed back in 2014, with the sale of the building announced two years later.

Members of the planning committee had welcomed the development, which also received several dozen letters of support from local people.

Although the council's highways team believes that the scheme could add to pressure on its own car park revenue, given the provision of free bays.
