Loki Wine is expanding to Moseley and will open a shop on St Mary’s Row.

The award-winning wine seller is taking over the currently empty site of gift shop Pottery & Pieces.

Loki, named after the Norse god of mischief, is currently thriving in Great Western Arcade in the city centre, where it opened in 2012 and recently doubled in size .

Now the expansion plans continue with the opening of a shop in Moseley which will operate as a fine wine merchant and wine bar, selling wine and having tasting events in the evening.

Loki has hundreds of bottles of wine in stock from £6.99 to rare bottles for more than £1,000, as well as more than 30 types of gin.

Special wine preservation machines mean you can taste before you buy for as little as 69p a glass.

You can relax, imbibe and match the wines with cold meat and cheese platters.

Loki is the most awarded wine merchant in the UK in the last five years, including winning National Merchant of the Year this year in the world’s most prestigious wine awards, the International Wine Challenge.

A planning application has been submitted for a change of use from a shop to a mixed shop and drinking establishment.

The plans are for a shop towards the front of the site with wine shelves and a tasting machine.

Towards the back will be tables and chairs for wine tasting and events, plus a small covered outdoor seating area.

It is planned to open the shop from noon until 11pm on Tuesday to Saturday and until 9pm on Sundays, to allow events to take place in the evening.

There will be three full-time and three part-time members of staff.

Loki’s planning application mentions that its shop will fulfil several policies in the Birmingham Development Plan, including “encouraging independent and niche retailers across the city” and maintaining the number of shops in the area rather than coffee shops or restaurants.

The application says: “The proposed use will add an independent retailer to the retail offer of Moseley centre. Loki Wine’s retail model has been successful in Birmingham city centre and is considered to be an appropriate addition to Moseley.”
