The team delivering the major regeneration in Walsall is looking for two business people with a passion for the town to join the continuing drive for its transformation.

Walsall Regeneration Company (WRC) wants to appoint two non-executive directors from the private sector who can add their skills to help restore Walsall as a vibrant force in the renaissance of the Black Country and Birmingham City Region.

The successful applicants do not need experience in the regeneration sector however they will have to demonstrate a commitment to Walsall and have a broad understanding of the key issues in the region and have held executive positions. The posts are unpaid but expenses will be met.

The regeneration is focusing on a number of key projects including a new Walsall College with the old site being developed by Tesco, significant improvements to the ringroad and further development to the canal basin around the New Walsall Art Gallery.

WRC is also focused on attracting private and public sector investment for a near £1 billion programme of major transformational projects, including the £400 million Walsall Gigaport, a dynamic business quarter with a high speed, big bandwidth ‘future proof’ fibre optic communications platform that will support high technology industries.

WRC chairman Ben Reid said: “These are exciting times for Walsall with WRC developing and delivering schemes which will encourage enterprise and skills and provide new jobs, new homes and a better future for our communities.

“We are looking for people with expertise, enthusiasm and ideas who share our passion. The non-executive directors have an important role in supporting and advising the management team which is driving Walsall’s renaissance.”

Non-executive directors on average attend two meetings and spend a minimum of one day a month on WRC activities.

Geoff Archenhold, who joined the board five years ago and is continuing as a non-executive director, said: “It is very rewarding and an opportunity to engage with people from different sectors, both public and private, to make a real difference to Walsall.

“It’s certainly broadened my perspective, looking at how issues are handled at a regional, national and even international level. And it has been a particular beneficial experience in helping to progress the new Walsall Manor Hospital development.”

Those interested in applying to become a non-executive director should write to Dr Peter Cromar, Chief Executive, Walsall Regeneration Company, 65/66 Ablewell Street, Walsall, WS1 2EU, detailing their experience and how they can contribute to WRC’s work.

They can also call Dr Cromar on 01922 659 500 for an informal and confidential discussion.
