Ubiquitous coffee shop operator Starbucks is planning to open yet another venue in Birmingham city centre.

The US chain is eyeing space in the five-storey building at 10 Cherry Street opposite House of Fraser which previously housed a Carphone Warehouse.

If successful, it would become the group's seventh café in Birmingham's main city centre area, joining venues at New Street station, Colmore Row, New Street and three in Bullring, alongside venues at the Mailbox and in Broad Street.

Starbucks, which has lodged a planning application with Birmingham City Council, is planning to occupy the ground and basement area of 10 Cherry Street which is Grade II listed and was built in the 1880s.

If successful, the new venue will not only face fierce competition for customers from its own sister sites but a host of cafés in close proximity to Cherry Street.

Independent outfit Damascena is due to open in Temple Row West early next year while Pret a Manger is next door and the Great Western Arcade a short walk away.
