The Cube building in Birmingham has been named as a winner of a major architectural prize.

The building, which is near the Mailbox won a Royal Institute of British Architects regional award for the West Midlands category.

The design of the 25-storey building was inspired by the vision of award-winning “Gherkin” architect Ken Shuttleworth, and his team Make Architects.

Neil Edginton, director at The Cube, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won the RIBA Award and it’s great to get recognition for pushing the boundaries with building design.

The Cube has fast become one of Birmingham’s must see places and with the opening of the latest restaurant, Rodizio Rico, there’s even more reasons to visit.”

Greg Willis, partner at Make Architects said: “We are thrilled to receive such an accolade. From the outset we always aimed to design The Cube as a striking and truly mixed use scheme and it’s heartening to see it being both recognised and adopted by visitors and peers alike.”

The design concept behind The Cube was based on a “jewellery box”.

The iconic building includes the boutique hotel Hotel Indigo, private health club and spa theclubandspa and the city’s first panoramic rooftop restaurant, Marco Pierre White's Steak House.

A recent new addition includes Rodizo Rico, a Brazilian restaurant that opened its doors to the public last week.

This year’s RIBA Regional Award winners included the London 2012 Olympic Stadium and a house in the shape of a sand dune.
