Birmingham-based property and construction practice Rider Levett Bucknall has scooped a UK-wide award for quantity surveyor of the year.

Mitchells and Butlers, the UK’s leading operator of managed pubs and pub restaurants, presented the award at the consultancy’s Birmingham Millennium Point headquarters.

Rider Levett Bucknall has worked with Mitchells and Butlers, which offers eating, drinking and entertainment for customers in around 2,000 outlets, for nine years.

During that time Rider Levett Bucknall has managed 829 projects for the pub and restaurant operator, representing an investment in excess of £200million.

In the last 12 months, despite the credit crunch biting, the partnership has completed 42 projects in investments to the value of £15million.

David Middleton, group building manager for Mitchells and Butlers, said: “In the last 12 months Rider Levett Bucknall has delivered our projects within 0.2 per cent of our original budget. Cost control like this is absolutely fantastic and is just what we are looking for.

“When it comes to quantity surveying, Mitchells and Butlers are much like any other client. We want solid, reliable cost advice and we don’t like surprises! We need to know where we are in real-time to enable us to make business decisions in a timely manner.

“This is something that Rider Levett Bucknall has excelled at this year. The firm should be rightly proud of their achievements – it’s been a great year, a great result and the reason we have chosen the firm to receive this award.”

The projects completed for Mitchells and Butlers have varied from larger acquisition refurbishments to small desk-top cost advise and management.

Other assistance included help with complicated tendering of schedules of rates for mechanical and electrical contractors.

Richard Naylor, of Rider Levett Bucknall, said he was very proud, on behalf of the team to accept the award.
