Developers have been given the green light to complete the final phase of the £200 million Pebble Mill scheme.

With the scheme already 75 per cent let, Edgbaston-based developer Calthorpe Estates - which is currently at the MIPIM property conference - has been granted planning consent for a 53,800 sq ft healthcare facility on plot four.

Bordered by the Bristol Road and Pershore Road, the landmark Pebble Mill project will see the former headquarters for the BBC in the Midlands transformed into a hub of medical and Life Science excellence, which will employ over 1,000 people when complete.

Ralph Minott, director of development at Calthorpe Estates, said it was a significant milestone for Pebble Mill. 

“Plot four represents the final piece of the jigsaw for Pebble Mill, and with this latest announcement it is clear the vision behind this project is being realised.


“Calthorpe Estates has secured planning consent for a new medical and healthcare facility on the last remaining development plot at Pebble Mill as a proactive step towards unlocking the potential of Plot 4, and to ensure prospective occupiers are in pole position to deliver on their ambitions for this area of the site.”

Three quarters of the 27-acre Pebble Mill scheme has already been secured with development partners, including a new Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry – the first new dental hospital for the UK in nearly 40 years. 

Scheduled to open in autumn 2015, the new facility will attract 600 students and over 100,000 visitors each year. 

Bupa Care Homes has planning permission to build a 35,000 sq ft, 62 bed en-suite care home at Pebble Mill and Circle Health – one of the UK’s leading private hospital operators – has taken part of the site to build a 161,400 sq ft cutting edge private hospital. 

Mr Minott added: “With construction already under way on the new Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry, the final infrastructure works being completed on site, and work expected to start on the new Bupa Care Home later in the spring, the regeneration of Pebble Mill is gathering serious momentum, whilst raising the bar as a pinnacle of healthcare provision.”
