Historic Birmingham shopping mall the Great Western Arcade has appointed a new centre manager.

Shaun Mountain has taken over the helm of the grade II-listed arcade in Colmore Row which contains a string of independent retailers, cafés and restaurants.

He replaces James Roberts who is now centre manager at the Grosvenor Centre in Northampton.

Mr Mountain has more than 16 years of retail experience and joins the Great Western Arcade from The Perfume Shop where he was sales and operations area manager for the Birmingham region.

He began his retail career as a sales assistant at Superdrug, covering positions in Merry Hill and Bullring, gradually working his way up through the management team.

He spent a year as a store manager designate in the West Midlands before being promoted to store manager of the Superdrug store in Perry Barr.

He then moved to take over running The Perfume Shop in the Bullring before being promoted to area manager for the company after three and half years, becoming one of the firm's youngest people in that role.

Mr Mountain said: "I am delighted to join the team at Great Western Arcade and continue the great work that has already been done to ensure the hidden gems within the arcade are uncovered.

"We have a number of independent retailers who all bring something a little bit different to our city and I'm looking forward to raising their profile alongside the arcade to ensure our customers have an enjoyable experience."

Beverly Parker, senior associate of Global Mutual, retail asset manager of Great Western Arcade, added: "We are really pleased to welcome Shaun to the team.

"He brings with him a wealth of experience which will help grow the arcade and give our independent retailers the opportunity to evolve."
