Plans have been lodged to build a new 14-storey hotel in Birmingham city centre.

Jurys Inn is working with Capita Real Estate & Infrastructure on the project to redevelop land behind the former's building in Broad Street.

The company wants to develop a new hotel with 261 bedrooms over nine storeys, sitting above a five-storey car park with 152 spaces and bike storage facilities.

The application site, in Berkley Street, is currently occupied by a 200-space, multi-storey car park for staff and guests of the Jurys Inn which would be demolished to make way for the new building.

The car park element of the new development would then serve both hotels.

The new hotel would operate under the little known 'NYX' brand which first launched in spring 2017 and currently has sites in mainland Europe and Israel as well as its UK first in Edinburgh.

NYX bills itself as a lifestyle brand and both it and Jurys Inn are part of the wider Leonardo Hotels group which operates more than 150 sites across Europe.

If handed the green light city planning chiefs, it would join an already competitive area for hotel guests with the busy night-time economy on Broad Street at weekends and the business tourism associated with the nearby ICC.

It will also be served by the West Midlands Metro extension running along Broad Street which is due to open in 2021.
