The £5.5 million redevelopment of an old school in Birmingham is a step away from completion after a deal to create a new café-bar.

Boston Tea Party has signed up to The School Yard development at the Grade II-listed Clock Tower in Harborne, Birmingham, with an opening planned for June.

The café chain replaces plans for a a Metro Bar at the former school building, after those proposals failed to materialise.

The venue will have extended opening hours, from 7am to 11pm, and developer Neil Edginton, of EDG Property, said it will enhance the scheme by offering food throughout the day.

The end of the first phase is now in sight, with a new food school expected to sign up within weeks.

Mr Edginton said: “At the moment we have got a coffee shop and an Italian restaurant but Boston Tea Party is very different.

“You can go in there all day – from grabbing breakfast at 7am to snacks and a beer before 11pm.

“When I wonder up the High Street the places that are always full are Caffè Nero and Arka Lounge, because they operate all day long, and that is what this does.

"It is going to bring massive footfall throughout the day, and it is a new name for Harborne, which shows confidence in Harborne village.”

The School Yard is already home to national restaurant chain Prezzo and Urban Coffee Company. Work on the second phase, which will be residential, has begun and is close to being fully let.

The addition of Boston Tea Party follows the opening of its first café-bar in the city in 2012.

The opening is scheduled for late June and will seat around 100 people inside, with a further 50 outside in a private walled garden and will create 20 jobs.

Boston Tea Party managing director Sam Roberts said: “We hope it will be a space for the locals to come and enjoy anything from a coffee, bite to eat to a craft ale or glass of wine.”
