An office building in the heart of Solihull could be converted into 41 flats, it has been revealed.

The application, lodged with the borough council last week, seeks approval for a change of use at Sandford House, in Homer Road.

The proposals would see "the entire" three-storey office building turned over to residential use, specifically one and two-bedroom apartments.

While potential residents would have a glut of car parking spaces - the current offices have access to 130 bays - there are no plans for a garden area apart from the "ornamental planting" which would be retained as part of the scheme.

A planning statement which forms part of the application notes that the current National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) makes the case that councils should "recognise that residential development can play a significant role in ensuring the vitality of centres."

It goes on to argue that there are "no outstanding issues" for development not to be permitted.

The site is currently occupied by the Immigration Office, but it is understood that their lease is to come to an end in 2019.

This part of the town centre has seen a number of changes in recent times, with the former Solihull Magistrates Court having been acquired by supermarket chain Aldi, for use as a training centre.

Just down the road, a separate apartment scheme was approved for the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) offices, while the nearby Solihull Police Station could also be put to new use after the controversial sale of the premises was agreed earlier this year.
