A former supermarket and café in Edgbaston which closed down last year is to be reborn as a new office development.

The Tesco and Costa Coffee in the Broadway building at Five Ways island is to be converted into new office space.

Tesco announced in June 2015 that it planned to close the shop at a time when it was battling huge company debt.

The unit, in Ladywood Middleway, had faced competition from its own, much larger store at Spring Hill island which opened in 2010 and the Morrisons in nearby Hagley Road which launched in 2012.

The ground and first floors of Broadway will be turned into office space and 21 parking spaces will be allocated in the neighbouring multi-storey car park.

Work is nearing completion on redevelopment of the rest of the building to create more than 200 apartments to sit alongside the incumbent offices which are let to the Government.

Colmore Tang Construction, which led the redevelopment of Auchinleck House opposite to turn it into a new Park Regis hotel, is behind the revamp of Broadway.

Managing director Andy Robinson said: "The space is fantastic and we see this an opportunity for additional quality office space in the Five Ways area.

"This will complement the new residential and leisure offerings that Colmore Tang Construction has also been involved in the development and construction of."
