Part of the Methodist Central Hall in Birmingham city centre is to be sold at auction with a guide price of £700,000 - £800,000.

Property consultants Bruton Knowles and auctioneers Allsop have been instructed to dispose of the leasehold interest in the shops, offices, restaurant and redundant Chinese Methodist Church on the ground floor and basement of the Grade II listed building in Corporation Street.

The property totals more than 31,000 sq ft, with seven of the 11 units currently occupied.

The freeholder, Central Hall Developments, who acquired the freehold from the Methodists in 1989, is retaining the upper floors and has planning permission to redevelop them into apartments and offices.

John Tooke from Bruton Knowles said: “With the ground floor units producing an annual rental income of circa £127,000, and additional rental income to be gained from the four vacant units, this is an exciting opportunity for an investor and we’re expecting a lot of interest at the auction.”

Designed by architects Ewan Harper and James A Harper, the landmark Edwardian red brick and terracotta building was used as a place of worship until the early 1980s and has been listed of national architectural and historic interest.

In 1991, the main hall was converted into a nightclub until its closure in 2002. It later reopened as the Q Club in 2007.

The building has been the subject to a number of planning applications to convert it into offices and apartments.

The auction will take place at the Park Lane Hotel, London, on December 3.
