A car dealership in Birmingham will close next month as it plans to scale down the size of its network across the UK.

Lookers Vauxhall in Yardley is set to shut on May 11 along with a second dealership in Cheshire but the company was unable to confirm at this stage how many redundancies there would be.

A statement from Lookers said: "We can confirm that we will shortly be closing our Yardley and Warrington Vauxhall dealerships.

"This decision has been made in light of the well-publicised intention of Vauxhall to reduce the size of its dealer network in the UK.

"We can confirm that there are no plans to close any other Lookers Vauxhall branches and we will continue to work in a successful partnership with Vauxhall at all other sites."

Lookers also runs Vauxhall dealerships in Nechells and Selly Oak.

A letter sent to customers said that warranties and work on vehicles normally handled in Yardley could be dealt with at other dealerships in the group.

It added: "Please be assured, this is not a decision we are taking lightly but is a consequence of our business strategy which aims to have the right brands in the right locations.

"Lookers Vauxhall has significant representation in Birmingham and....(the closure) will consolidate and strengthen our business further, providing an improved customer experience, greater choice and enhanced facilities."
