Comedian Jasper Carrott was recognised for his work promoting Birmingham at the BCI annual banquet.

The veteran funnyman was presented with a special award to mark his 30-year career and the tireless work he does to promote the city and various charitable causes.

Meanwhile the business of the year award went to Widney UK, the Aston-based company which has been associated with major market sectors for more than 50 years. It has one of the most modern and specialist manufacturing plants in Europe.

The runners up were Evac+Chair International and Reactfast.

SME of the year was won by Discount Computer Supplies an IT retailer which specialises in the education sector.

Al Frash Balti House and Keen Kleen were also shortlisted

The Business Charter of the Year Award, sponsored by Birmingham and Solihull councils, went to Kitts Green-based Alcoa Europe. The Business Action on Homelessness Steering Group and PCPT Architects were runners-up.
