High numbers of cars built for export helped British car factories to keep turning over at high speed in November despite slowing home production

A total of 149,662 vehicles came off the assembly lines, a 0.3 per cent increase on the same month last year, National Statistics said.

But export production rose by 4.4 per cent to 119,390 units, which was equivalent to 79.8 per cent of output.

The number of cars built for the home market fell by 13.2 per cent to 30,272, the figures showed.

In all, Britain produced 1.5 million cars in the first 11 months of this year - a 2.4 per cent fall compared with the January-November 2004 total.

The figures showed that the industry has bounced back from the loss of MG Rover.

Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders chief executive Christopher Macgowan said: "Export volumes continue to boost car production in the UK. Overall car output in 2005 should hit 1.6 million units, a little down on 2004." ..SUPL:
