It was a triumphant night for two of the city's department stores at the annual Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce Awards.

Andy Street, managing director of John Lewis, took home the president's award while Selfridges was named the first winner of the new retail award at last night's ceremony.

In addition to his role leading the famous department store chain, Mr Street is also chairman of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership.

Chamber president Greg Lowson, himself a winner at last week's Birmingham Law Society Legal Awards, said: "We have probably the best LEP in the country and Andy can take significant credit for that success.

"His role there and in everything he does behind the scenes to promote this city and region is the best example of 'putting something back' and 'going the extra mile'."

Mr Street has spent his career at the John Lewis Partnership, joining after graduating from Oxford University with a degree in politics, philosophy and economics in 1985 and becoming managing director in 2007.

The chain is also the anchor tenant of the new Grand Central shopping centre which opened above the revamped New Street station last September.

The retail award was created to recognise what the chamber called "the huge strides Birmingham has made as an outstanding shopping centre".

Selfridges, one of the anchor tenants in Bullring, was recognised for its £20 million revamp.

The store is home to 100,000 product lines and more than 700 brands and has made the investment over three years as well as starting to showcase Birmingham's community and culture.

General manager Adam Hockney said: "The overall vision of the store is to be the creative heart of retail in Birmingham.

"Over the next three years, the in-store development, local partnerships and by working alongside the community, we will make Selfridges the ultimate retail destination in the city."
