The first phase of a major residential project expected to create 1,500 jobs during its lifespan will go before city planning chiefs later this week.

York-based housebuilder Persimmon lodged plans earlier this year to build 96 homes on the former Selly Oak Hospital site as part of a wider scheme which could eventually see a £100 million investment into the development of 650 new homes.

City council officers have recommended members of its planning committee approve phase one which comprises 98 homes, including 18 affordable units, a new cricket pitch and pavilion, open space and parking on land off Acacia Road and Raddlebarn Road.

The houses would be a mix of detached, semi-detached and short terraces with two, three or four bedrooms.

A report prepared ahead of the meeting said: "The proposed scheme reflects the principles of good design....in terms of the creation of a high-quality environment which respects the context of the site.

"The proposed development would be sympathetic to the character of its surroundings, including the adjacent Bournville Conservation Area, in terms of both the scale and design of the houses and the landscaped setting.

"The layout would also respect the level of amenity currently enjoyed by existing occupiers adjoining the site and would provide an attractive living environment for future occupiers."

The 43-acre site, which was previously owned by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, lies just east of the A38 and close to both Selly Oak and Bournville stations.

The hospital underwent a phased closure following the opening of Queen Elizabeth Hospital in June 2010.
