A new beer has been brewed to raise a glass to Birmingham's Peaky Blinders.

Peaky Blinder Gold, named after the popular BBC2 drama based in Birmingham, is a new craft beer made by Sadler's Ales Brewery in Stourbridge.

Peaky Blinders has proved a nationwide hit, following the story of the Shelbys, a family of Small Heath gangsters after the First World War.

The dark and hoppy Peaky Blinder beer, made with five different malts, was first launched in April 2014 and made to taste like the beer that Brummies would have been drinking in the 1920s.

The new Gold variant, launched in partnership with Quinton-based Swallow Drinks, is lighter at 4.3 per cent alcohol by volume rather than 4.6 per cent, and is aiming for wider appeal.

Steve Land, Swallow's managing director, said: "The original was identical to the beer people drank after the First World War, so we developed a more contemporary, crisper version at 4.3 per cent, which responds to the trend for lighter and more flavoursome craft beers. It appeals to a wider variety of drinkers and is great with food."

Peaky Blinder Gold will be stocked at St Andrew's, the home of Birmingham City - the football team followed by the Shelbys and their creator Steven Knight.

It will also be on sale at Marriot Hotels and several nightclubs and theatres in the West Midlands and will be available in cases of eight 500ml bottles priced at £12.99.

Established in 1986, Swallow Drinks is a wholesaler supplying premium drinks to hotels, pubs, restaurants and theatres.

It was the first to import Estrella beer into the UK.
