A chandelier costing £100,000 has gone on sale at a new Birmingham store founded by a husband and wife team.

Giant lighting store i-lite has opened its doors in Soho Hill, Handsworth, offering the premium chandelier for customers with very deep pockets.

Veena Bhambra, who founded the store with husband Kiran, said her network of producers means the sky is the limit when it comes to commissioned chandeliers.

Luckily there are others within the price range of most people in the 15,000ft concept store space.

Ms Bhambra said she hoped to use the shop to showcase local artistic talent and added that the new business had already attracted custom from around the UK .

“There is really no upper limit – people could spend as much as they like,” she said.

“We have table lamps for £1,000 but it can go beyond £100,000 for commissioned work.”

Ms Bhambra added: “Because of our location we get customers from all over the country, including lots from London.

“We have had people come down from Scotland and Newcastle because we are so central.”

The store has been two years in the planning and, among other cutomers, supplies homes, hotels, restaurants and banqueting halls.

Ms Bhambra has secured exclusive deals with internationally renowned manufacturers like Terzani, Brand Van Egmond, Flos, Foscarini, Waterford and Lladro and i-lite is also one of the few Schonbeck Swarovski Crystal Palace-approved lighting partners in the UK.

Ms Bhambra added: “We can commission work from the best of the world, like Schonbek, Swarovski Crystal Palace and Masiero Group.

“Generally, these are only in places like London or Dubai but we are bringing it to Birmingham, and there is nowhere else like it here.

“In London everything is very dotted around and generally you’ll get lighting along with accessories but this is far larger.”

Ms Bhambra said she wanted to support local artists and was starting with Moseley sculptor Paul Brown. While people with £100,000 buring a hole in their pocket might be expecting to shop in Mayfair or Dubai, she believes the location in the heart of the country is a major asset for i-lite.

She said: “We were travelling to London and across Europe in our own pursuit of exclusive lighting and we felt that, Birmingham being the second city of the UK, it should be able to offer the same for discerning clients who don’t have the time to travel to identify good lighting and great service.

“Hence we’ve presented a curation of the best and most premium products to clients. Among our client list, we are already servicing two major, national property developers.”
