An independent café in the Jewellery Quarter is closing tomorrow after four years of business despite the owner being "tantalisingly close" to making it work.

Brewsmiths, which is under the Livery Street railway arches and counts Hollywood actor Davie Harewood among its fans, will serve its last cup of coffee at 2pm.

Owner Andrew McKay, who has run the business for the past two years, said he was taking the difficult decision to shut it down.

While just a short walk from the Colmore Business District and St Paul's Square, the café is not on a route of high footfall.

It is also opposite Ludgate Hill Street Car Park which will eventually house more than 230,000 sq ft of office and commercial space and 320 flats however the first phase of this redevelopment is not due for completion until early 2018.

He said: "It is a great shame but we have reached the point where we have to close.

"We have always been tantalisingly close to making it work but never quite been able to become financially stable. Location is crucial and we were just a bit too tucked away.

"There are some developments in the pipeline which could change that but they are too far in the future for me to hang on. I have taken it as far as I can but I hope someone else could buy it as a going concern.

"Otherwise, I will have to sell the assets. I hope someone with fresh ideas could make it work."
