A giant 138ft-long bridge has been built at Birmingham Airport ahead of the arrival of the world's largest passenger airliner later this month.

The Airbus A380 is so large that the airport has spent £1 million building the new airbridge to allow passengers to disembark from the top deck.

The airliner will be used from Birmingham Airport for its lunchtime service to Dubai from March 27.

Emirates will be replacing the current Boeing 777 with the A380 - an upgrade will increase daily capacity to and from the region by 15 per cent.

An airport spokesperson said: "It's an investment of £1 million and, although we were able to accommodate the aircraft without making this investment, for operational efficiency and service we decided that this would be right thing to offer to Emirates and its passengers.

"Essentially, the new airbridge is to allow passengers to embark and disembark from the top deck.

"The existing bridge allows two of the lower deck doors to be used at the same time. Passengers on the upper deck will embark/disembark through the bridge onto the departures level of the pier and then walk up/down to the arrivals level via stairs."

The new airbridge was constructed over three days last week.

When extended, it is 138ft long and 30ft high.

Landing A380 flights was a big boost for Birmingham Airport, which has ambitions of attracting more passengers than the record 10.2 million who passed through it last year.

The only other time an A380 has visited the airport was in September 2009 when it was flown in to be part of the 70th anniversary celebrations.

The giant airliner carries 557 passengers in economy class and 58 in business class.
