Chancellor George Osborne has pledged to ensure help is available for the 200 workers axed at Bournville.

Cadbury owner Mondelez international is shedding the staff as part of an efficiency drive which will see £75 million invested into the plant.

Speaking on a visit to the region, Mr Osborne said the job losses were "regrettable" but pledged help.

He said: "Every time jobs are lost that is hugely regrettable. I know it is a real stress for the families involved.

"The good news is that jobs are being created elsewhere in the Midlands. Jaguar Land Rover has just announced 1,300 jobs.

"So jobs are available. We will make sure there is maximum help available to those who have lost their jobs at Bournville to make sure they can find new work or if they need some extra skills to give them those skills."

The Post reported this week that the Unite trade union had hailed a historic deal which ensured a £75 million programme of investment at Bournville with new production lines and ruled out compulsory job losses.

It will see 205 long-serving members of staff depart the chocolate giant but they will leave with average payoffs of more than £100,000 each.
