Birmingham's German Christmas Market has opened in the city centre - and it looks like it's beaten the Brexit blues.

We looked around all the stalls at the market and found prices of food and drink were the same as in 2015.

Although Brexit has not yet been put into effect by the government, the pound plunged in value following the European Referendum result in June.

This means the stallholders will end up with less when they convert their takings back to euros after getting home.

All the stallholders we spoke to were from Germany, despite the claims of critics who say the festive attraction is not authentic.

But it looks like there has been no price hike at the market to compensate for the poor state of the pound.

Milena Steinmann, from Bremen, who runs the Sausage Grill at the market, told the Birmingham Mail: "In common with everyone else our prices are the same as last year, despite Brexit.

"We want everyone to come down to have a great time."

Prices of identical foods, drinks and other items are kept the same across all the wooden huts at the market every year.

The first visitors seemed happy with what was on offer - including the prices.

John and Shelley Breeze from Erdington shared hot potatoes, garlic sauce and mushrooms.

Shelley said: "I love this meal and come to the German Market to have it every year. It is fantastic.

"As soon as I know the market is open ending I just have to come to have it."

Asked whether she'd feel the same if the prices had risen with a Brexit effect, she said: "I hadn't even thought about that. I love it so much I would have paid if it had gone up."

The German market is staying in the city longer this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the twinning of Birmingham and Frankfurt. It will be here until December 29 (but closed on Christmas Day) and opens from 10am to 9pm every day.

Birmingham's seasonal shopping attraction was established by the organisers of Frankfurt's own seasonal market in 1997 and has been an annual fixture since 2001.

The neighbouring Christmas Craft Market, run by West Midlands traders, opens on Saturday, November 19, along with the Big Wheel and Ice Rink.
