BDO’s Technology Advisory Team hosted the second in its series of briefings for the “Reluctant IT Director” at BDO’s offices in Colmore Row.

These briefings are aimed specifically at senior managers in mid-sized businesses, such as the finance director, who have been “dropped in IT”.

In this session, the presenters explored the practicalities of three topical areas – Cloud computing, the Paperless Office and Life after Windows XP – giving independent and pragmatic advice on IT matters of relevance.

The aim of these sessions is to help non-technical senior personnel to understand the practical and commercial issues inherent in technical matters.

John Dennison, Gavin Davis and Jason Meers from the BDO Technology Advisory team presented at the event. Mr Dennison said: “We keep the agendas for these briefing sessions relevant by asking the attendees to nominate topics for exploration at future sessions.

“Cloud-computing is a good example. There is considerable talk about the benefits of this technology, but this is usually delivered by those selling Cloud services. Mid-market organisations cannot justify the cost of an IT director and responsibility is generally assigned to the head of finance who may not be IT savvy.

“With business IT becoming increasingly sophisticated and such people are being called on to make decisions on technology that are well out of their comfort zone. These workshops and BDO’s Reluctant IT Director Forum on LinkedIn provide a source of independent advice and support,” Mr Dennision added.
