When it comes to recycling, a Birmingham charity has got it sorted.

Brumcan, based in Nechells, provides a range of value for money, integrated waste recycling services to help achieve sustainable solutions to the ever-growing problems of commercial and domestic waste in the Birmingham area.

The charity was recently given a boost with a donation of #350 from generous city workers at Edgbaston-based Pertemps People Development Group (PPDG).

The employees' donation, suggested by Linda Harris of PPDG's Sparkhill office, is being put towards the cost of buying a new can sorter. PEA employees contribute each month to a Give As You Earn (GAYE) scheme and have donated more than #20,000 to dozens of good causes and charities in the last 12 months.

Richard Harper, Brumcan's operations co-ordinator, said: "We're very pleased to receive a donation of #350 from Pertemps People Development Group towards the cost of a can sorter. We have to sort the steel and aluminium cans that we collect and the sorter will help enormously."

Established in 1991 by Friends of the Earth and Community Service Volunteers, Brumcan also provides training and work experience placements in waste management for volunteers. This includes long term unemployed people and those with special needs in partnership with PPDG and Birmingham City Council's Employment Preparation Team.

Richard added: "We've got a very good relationship with the people at PPDG. We provide opportunities for unemployed people to have placements with us where they get experience in warehousing, sorting recycled waste, waste management and collecting waste from offices."

Linda Harris, of PPDG, said: "It is great to be able to work with such a worthwhile charity whilst supporting the needs of our clients too."

Over 66 per cent of PPDG employees have signed up to the GAYE scheme, which deducts money from the member's salary.
