Aspiring young accountants have been given an insight into how best to kick off their careers.

The advice came from Karren Brady, Birmingham City chief executive, when she shared her experiences of running the football club, and provided words of wisdom on motivation and what makes a successful leader.

Ernst & Young was playing host to a candidate event at its Colmore Square offices which attracted more than 60 leading professionals and trainees.

The current boom in the professional services sector, and in particular accountancy, has created a huge demand for talented people, which the industry has not experienced for a number of years.

Now E&Y is adopting a strategic approach to attracting top talent.

Speaking at the event Andy Glover, a partner with the firm, said: "It has been well documented that accountancy practices have been busily recruiting skilled staff to cope with client demands brought about by the US Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the transition to International Financial Reporting Standards."
