Black Country business leaders have signed a pledge to make energy savings to cut the area’s carbon footprint.

The Green Business Pledge, signed by the Black Country Chamber of Commerce and several of the larger businesses in the region, includes carbon offsetting by planting trees, turning off unused machinery and encouraging staff to use public transport.

James Cadman, managing director of Wednesbury-based Aqualux Products, which is taking part in the pledge, said: “All activities, however small, can make a difference. By cycling to work, walking to work and car sharing, we saved a huge 139.37kg of CO2.

“We also recorded the energy consumption at the plant used on a normal working day – a total of 2045kwh. This was then compared to our ‘Green Friday’, in which we used only 1709kwh – that’s a huge saving of 175.73kg carbon in just one day, by switching off unused machinery and lights.”

Mike Dell, president of Black Country Chamber of Commerce said “It is vital that businesses begin thinking about and implement long term sustainability measures to reduce their carbon footprint. We all need to become more aware of our impact our on the environment.”
