A Black Country charity that has helped more than 1,500 people into education, work, and self-employment is looking to attract new talent as part of its 20th anniversary.
Breathing Space, in Central Hall, Walsall, has started a recruitment drive to enlist new trustees to help it refocus and deliver plans that include moving to new premises, creating eight starter units and engaging with more individuals from hard to reach areas.
The organisation is determined to set up a company to contribute to the charitable work and secure formal recognition by OCR for its entrepreneurship course.
David Hill was announced as the first appointment, with the managing director of Hills plc impressed with the charity’s record helping individuals learn new skills and start new enterprises.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly successful organisation that is well respected, yet small enough to care,” he said. “We are looking for Trustees from the public and private sector, who can bring new skills, energy and contacts with partners and potential funders. As a trustee you must be able and willing to give time to the efficient administration of the charity and the fulfilment of its aims. You must be prepared to take an active part in its running and you must be a person of integrity who subscribes to our ideals.
“You will benefit from the opportunity to be involved in new enterprises and the chance to change lives. You will have a real input into the way our charity develops.”
Breathing Space offers mentoring, and training, giving people from the Black Country the chance to sharpen skills, develop attributes needed to run their own business and ongoing one-on-one support.
Some 72 people, many from disadvantaged areas and with barriers to overcome, became self employed in 2008.
“One of the ways people can enrich their lives is by self-employment. It is not right for everyone, but for individuals with energy and self-belief the advantages are endless,” said Mike Lee, director of operations at Breathing Space.
“We have an excellent course that has helped more than 1,500 entrepreneurs to start their own firms and we are urging anyone who wants to be their own boss to talk to us.
“Our experienced trainers can work with people from all walks of life and skill bases ... all you really need is the energy, determination and passion to succeed. We’ve even got 600 opportunities on our database to choose from at any one time.”
Breathing Space also provides one-to-one support in job search skills, reading and writing skills, coaching, mentoring and personal development.
Its base in the heart of Walsall is home to a host of facilities, including training and counselling rooms, a fully equipped IT suite and an internet and information cafe.
