And they’re off – in the panto horse races of the year to raise funds to buy a Variety Club sunshine coach.

On Friday August 1, Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry is staging pantomime horse races at Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium for staff, members and friends and family.

There’s a minimum pledge of £25 to be a horse and it is expected there will be at least 40 entrants.

The president of Birmingham Chamber, Rod Ackrill, chose the Variety Club as his charity for his year in office, and Henrik Court, head of membership at the chamber, said: “This is a real fun way of raising cash for a very worthy cause and the race day has already attracted an enormous of interest”.

Sponsors include the greyhound stadium, Midland Heart and peopleze.co.uk and the stadium doors open at noon with racing starting at 1pm. The starter is Matt Clarke, clerk of the stadium’s course.

In order to be declared a ‘winner’ entrants must still be in horse costume at the finish and will go through to the next round and eventually to the grand final.
