Birmingham firms could soon get the chance to show some patriotic fervour for their home city with a new flag.

The city colours will also be available to sports clubs, community groups and just about anyone who has pride in the city.

The idea was suggested by Lord Mayor Coun Mike Leddy as a way of expressing civic pride and for firms to show their roots.

He will now launch a competition for residents to come up with the final design, which would be approved by a group of councillors and vexillologists.

Birmingham has an official coat of arms, which depicts the blacksmith and artist and the Forward motto, and an official heraldic flag, on the Council House – but these can only be used on civic buildings.
