A Birmingham bike retailer is seeing a jump in customers as soaring fuel costs tempt commuters out of the car and onto two wheels.
On Your Bike, based in Bradford Street, said it has seen around a 20 per cent increase in customers in the last six months.
“There’s definitely been an increase in the number of people coming through the doors for information on bikes,” said On Your Bike general manager Stuart Duckworth.
“It’s probably useful that the prices of petrol is going up at this time of year, in the summer rather than winter.”
On Your Bike said many customers are turning to cycling to work in the face of the rising price of petrol, which yesterday averaged 119.4p a litre.
Mr Duckworth said employer-run cycle-to-work schemes, which give employees tax breaks on buying a bike, have also contributed.
“It’s an opportunity for people to get a bike a lot cheaper and it’s also good for companies who are trying to promote a sustainability strategy. They also get fitter, healthier and happier employees.”
“We’re selling mountain bikes, racing bikes, city hybrids and everything in between.
“There’s also a lot of interest in folding bikes – like the Brompton – as a lot of people who live in flats don’t have a lot of storage space to keep a bike.”
