VolkerFitzpatrick and Colas have been announced as the preferred contractors for Birmingham Airport’s runway extension.

The project also includes the A45 transport corridor improvement scheme and the announcement follows a competitive tender process run by Birmingham City Council.

The A45 infrastructure overhaul is set to get underway in July this year with the aim of being completed by summer 2013.

The estimated start date for the 405m runway extension scheme is June 2013 with the aim of it being operational by spring 2014.

The long-awaited runway extension will enable the introduction of flights to China, the west coast of the US and other long-haul destinations.

The estimated cost of the runway extension is £33 million, with a further £9 million spent on resurfacing the new runway.

It is estimated he A45 corridor improvement works will cost £32 million, with funding from Centro, the airport and potentially a contribution from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund.
