Magnus Uggla is to head up Handelsbanken's operations in the UK.
He was most recently responsible for the bank's largest regional bank in Stockholm and began his career with Handelsbanken the Swedish clearing bank - in the early 1980s.
The 53 year-old built up the New York branch for the bank during the latter half of the 1980's and was responsible for establishing Handelsbanken's presence in Norway, Finland and Denmark, where it now ranks among the top five banks in each market.
He will spearhead Handelsbanken's ambitious expansion plans for Britain, which is almost three times the size of the Nordic markets combined.
Handelsbanken current has 20 branches in England and Wales, including a large office n Birmingham.
