An accountant is setting up an interiors firm helping companies take advantage of the "healing" powers of plants and art in the workplace.

Anthony Simms is establishing Artstand – with help from Birmingham and Solihull Chamber of Commerce – to sell and rent plants and paintings to create soothing environments in offices, receptions and meeting rooms.

Mr Simms said: "Research has shown that the indoor climate in a third of all modern office buildings is inadequate, leading to increased staff sickness. Common complaints are a dry throat, headache, dizziness, fatigue, irritated eyes and airways.

"Introducing plants which put moisture back in the air and which are pleasant to look at can significantly reduce health complaints and reduce stress."

The company will be commissioning work from local artists to offer to offices. Mr Simms added: "Art can develop a happier, more productive work environment.

"Research carried out by Arts and Business showed that 73 per cent of employees want art in their workplace.  Crucially, 52 per cent of employees who considered themselves to be working for a very successful company were much more likely to have art on the wall."

Artstand will visit businesses and advise on the best way to improve their surroundings with plants and art, and will then hire them out to companies for a fixed period or on an ongoing basis.
