Developers Carillion have taken possession of the NEC Group's former offices at Bickenhill, which are to be turned into a £20 million hotel.
Work will begin shortly on transforming the 60,000 sq ft building, which comes with 2.3 acres of land, and a 166-bedroom Ramada Encore hotel is expected to open early next year.
The project, a joint venture by Carillion and New World Leisure, is part of a strategy aimed at increasing the range of accommodation at the NEC. The hotel will also have a restaurant, conference and meeting rooms and a business centre.
In order to complete the sale, almost 400 employees were relocated from NEC House to new offices above the exhibition halls. n A Birmingham hotel is to become the first in the city to offer dedicated bedrooms for airline staff.
Aircrew on stopovers will be able to take advantage of 30 bedrooms at the city centre Crowne Plaza that have improved noise insulation and black out curtains.
The rooms will be on a floor accessible only to airline and hotel staff, meaning that pilots and flight attendants can rest at any time of the day or night with the assurance that their sleep will not be disturbed. The Crowne Plaza is under-going a £16 million refurbishment.
