Birmingham rock legend Jeff Lynne teamed up with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl in a special Grammy salute to the Beatles in Los Angeles.

The ELO founder was one of a number of stars to lined up for a concert to mark the 50th anniversary of The Beatles appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show in the United States - considered a pivotal moment in the Fab Four's rise to superstardom.

Lynne and former Nirvana drummer Grohl performed Hey Bulldog at the Los Angeles Convention Center, watched by an audience filled with VIPs, including Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

Grohl introduced the song by telling the audience that if it were not for The Beatles, he himself would not be a musician, adding that they were his mum's, his daughter's and his own favourite band.

He said: "From a very early age I loved their groove and their swagger, their grace and their beauty, their dark and their light. The Beatles knew no boundaries.

"And in that freedom they seemed to define what we now know today as rock'n'roll."

He described Hey Bulldog as the "quintessential Beatles rocker", adding: "Paul's rolling bassline, the trademark Ringo drum fills, George's gritty distorted guitar and that sound that only the back of John Lennon's throat could produce."

After Hey Bulldog, Lynne stayed on stage to perform Something with former Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh and George Harrison's son Dhani.

Other performers at the event included Stevie Wonder, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and Alicia Keys, before Sir Paul and Ringo each sang Beatles songs.

Lynne recently became the latest name on the Broad Street Walk Of Stars in Birmingham . He is due to receive his star at a ceremony on March 13.

A tribute concert to mark the 51st anniversary of the night The Beatles played the Ritz Ballroom in Birmingham will take place this Sunday (February 16) at Fletchers Bar, in York Road, Kings Heath.
