Birmingham Contemporary Music Group has been shortlisted in the acclaimed RPS Music Awards, made by the Royal Philharmonic Society.

BCMG joins some of the music world’s most prestigious names, including conductor Claudio Abbado, pianist Maurizio Pollini and composer Harrison Birtwistle, on the awards shortlist.

The RPS Music Awards are for outstanding achievement in 2011. BCMG has been shortlisted in the Ensemble category, where it goes head-to-head the vocal group Exaudi, the National Youth Choir of Scotland and the Pavel Haas Quartet.

BCMG, which was founded in 1987, won an RPS award in 2005 for Audience Development, in recognition of its unique Rural Touring programme.

The annual RPS Music Awards, presented in association with BBC Radio 3, honour musicians, composers, writers, broadcasters and inspirational arts organisations.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at London’s Dorchester Hotel presented by BBC Radio 3’s Katie Derham and Petroc Trelawny on Tuesday, May 8. Radio 3 will broadcast a special RPS Music Awards programme on May 13 at 2pm.
