Six Birmingham restaurants have been named among the best in the UK by Harden’s Best Restaurant Guide 2018.

The yearly guide is based on one of the country’s most detailed surveys of regular restaurant-goers.

According to the guide, Michelin starred eateries Adams in Waterloo Street and Purnell’s in Cornwall Street are among the top 100 places to eat in the UK.

Also making the overall list were Carters of Moseley and Indian eatery Lasan, both listed in the over £60 category.

Harborne Kitchen in Harborne and Original Patty Men in Digbeth were the two restaurants in Birmingham ranked highest in the guide in its under £60 category.

Adams came 32nd in the UK list and was awarded a score of maximum 5 (food), 5(service), 4 (atmosphere), - just one short of the maximum 5, 5, 5 but still one of the top marks in the country.

“If it was in France, it would have its second star already!” is how one reviewer described Adam and Natasha Stokes’ “smart elegant and well spaced” restaurant.

Purnell’s in Cornwall Street featured 88th in the overall guide where guests laud an experience that’s “special but not stuffy”.

The restaurant helmed by celebrity chef Glynn Purnell achieved a 4, 5, 4 score.

Lasan in St Paul’s Square is described as “a distinct cut above the normal Brummie Indian,” delivering “a twist of the usual fare” with challenging and “really different” flavours.

On the other end of the scale is Harborne Kitchen which opened in November 2016.

It is a “new fine dining experience” in Harborne, with “amazing flavour combinations at reasonable prices for the level of cooking” Original Patty Men, which opened in Digbeth in 2015 and seats only 33 diners, also rated highly.

The yearly guide is based on a poll of 8,500 participants who contributed 50,000 reviews. These nominations, form the basis for the inclusions and ratings in the guide.

There are a total of 18 Birmingham entries in Hardens this year, including new entry Tom’s Kitchen in Mailbox. The restaurant is Michelin star chef Tom Aikens’ first UK restaurant outside London.

However one entry - NRI at Mailbox has not even opened!

Another new entry for this year is The Wilderness in Dudley Street, which is due to move premises in 2018.

The Hardens reviewers said: “The dining room is a bit makeshift and cluttered - like a pop-up waiting for a better venue to come along” - but the tasting menus focused on foraged and locally sourced ingredients that reflect the native ‘outdoors, weather and landscape’ are “great value”.

The restaurant is moving to Bennett’s Hill in January and it’s sous chef Louisa Ellis is currently in the finals of Masterchef: The Professionals

Birmingham restaurants Asha’s, Edmund’s Bistro de Luxe, Gourmet Burger Company, Karczma, Pure Craft Kitchen, Turners at 69 dropped out of the list this year.

Here are the top six restaurants and what the reviewers said:

“Birmingham’s best burger! (officially, according to survey ratings) and a tempting selection of beers from locals Siren Craft Brew are two compelling reasons to ignore the gratingly hip self- presentation of these Patty Pimps and Purveyors of Filth”

Purnell’s

“Stunning flavours, contrasting combination and presentation...by the time you reach the dry ice, dried mint and theatre of the final course, you’re a convert.

"TV chef Glynn Purnell creates an experience that’s special but not stuffy at his understated luxurious and romantic city centre HQ, providing great menu options that deliver on their promise and friendly but unobtrusive staff who show attention to detail at its best.

The competition in this “much underrated culinary city” is fierce nowadays, but for its fan club it’s “the top choice in town”

For the “pinnacle of fine dining” fans recommend the 10 seater Chef’s Table, “ which sits in full view of the vast kitchen where Adam and young team prepare their tiny creations with military precision.”

When it comes to the wine: “ Trust in Lionel ( the sommelier) whose knowledge but also personality will enhance your visit, with recommendations delivered with insight, warmth and humour!”

Carters of Moseley

“Where others have moved down-market Carters continues to soar” and while some regulars feel that “ if they would just move back to having a la carte menu it would be perfect” its dedication to a tasting formula generally pays off, with an “ever changing” array of dishes that are tasty and interesting and - while not particularly complex - work well.”

Harborne Kitchen

A “new fine dining experience in Harborne” and also “surprisingly situated amid charity shops in a residential part of town.

As befits the ambition of chef/ patron Jamie Desogus, dinner options include three courses a la carte or delicious six or eight course tasting menus with “amazing flavour combinations at reasonable prices for the level of cooking”.

Lasan

“A distinct cut above the normal Brummie Indian” Jabbar Khan’s “upmarket” Jewellery Quarter destination is the survey’s most commented on curry house in town. Delivering “ a twist of the usual fare” with challenging and “really different flavours”
