Robbie Williams: One Night at the Palladium (8pm, BBC 1)

I saw a T-Shirt recently that said: “What if the hokey cokey really is what it’s all about?”

And that was kind of the reaction to Robbie Williams’  show at the London Palladium back in November.

What if  during his entire career up until this point – the Take That years,  Angels, the soul-searching documentaries and all the rest of it – he was merely biding his time until he could launch himself as a cross between Michael Bublé and Morecambe and Wise?  What if inside the credible pop performer there was a shiny-floored Christmas special just waiting to get out?

This made-for-TV concert was timed to coincide with the release of Swings Both Ways  which has already ensured its place in musical history by dint of becoming the UK’s 1,000th number one album.  It’s the follow-up to his first big band release Swing When You’re Winning from 2001 which became his most successful ever.

At the Palladium the tone for the evening was pretty much set when he was introduced by Kermit the Frog.  And if you were at the Palladium but had the cheap seats up in the Gods, you’ll be relieved to see in his duet on Somethin’ Stupid that Nicole Kidman hasn’t really  let herself go – he’s actually singing with Miss Piggy.  There are more duets with Rufus Wainwright and, wonderfully, his dad, Pete Conway. But amid all the glitter, the fat-suits, and the high wire japes, there’s some genuine emotion too in Go Gentle – a song for his daughter written with his old song-writing partner Guy Chambers.  This is one pairing that proves the old Robbie is still in there somewhere.

The Walking Dead (10pm, Fox)

Praying for the day when you return to prison seems weird, but after two weeks with The Governor/One-Eyed-Brian, fans of this show will be thrilled that we’re back behind bars – and can finally see Daryl’s reaction to the news that his ‘Will they? Won’t they?’ partner Carol has been banished.

The previous episode closed with The Governor pointing his gun at Michonne. Considering the frenetic state of his mind, you have no idea if he’ll pull the trigger or run up to her and ask her to use her ninja skills to protect his new ‘daughter’.

If you’ve managed to avoid any of the spoilers for this mid-season finale, well done. And we’re not going to do anything to ruin things by telling you what happens in the long-awaited Governor/Rick show down. Suffice to say there's lots of blood splatter.   This show doesn’t shy away from bumping off its lead characters at the drop of a hat, no actor is immune from picking up the American version of their P45. So keep your fingers crossed  that your favourites will survive until  the series resumes in February.

Kangaroo Dundee  (8.30pm, BBC2)

Last week we met Chris “Brolga” Barnes – the Aussie bloke playing surrogate mum to orphaned kangaroos in a shack outside Alice Springs.   This week the flies (oh my God, the flies!) are stopping his two new babies  Rex and Ruby from getting enough sleep.

Constantly swatting away flying insects is as much of a full-time job as motherhood, and is another good reason why joeys would normally spend the first months of their lives inside their mothers’ pouches.  But how do they go to the toilet, you might wonder. All is explained this week and you’ll probably be sorry you asked.

Also tonight we meet  two other women, Cynthia and Anne-Marie who also care for baby kangaroos in their own suburban homes but evidently weren’t deemed exotic enough for their own series.  If you thought baby kangaroos couldn’t get any more heart-melting, just wait till you see one of them bouncing about in a Jolly Jumper.

SOAP ROUND-UP

Emmerdale (7pm, ITV)

As she tries to patch up her farm business, Moira goes to ask her brother-in-law James for help, but discovers that his farm is in an even more parlous state than her own.  But we also get our first glimpse of  two more Barton cousins – Pete and Finn.

Elsewhere, Declan is hoping to make a million pounds from his casino night at Home Farm – which seems a tad on the optimistic side, even without Alicia and Nicola on croupier duty.

Coronation Street (7.30pm and 8.30pm, ITV)

Hayley’s son Christian is back again tonight, and Roy and Fiz are both horrified to find out the reason for his change of heart.  Not so Hayley: she’s overjoyed at the chance to meet her grandchildren for the first time – whatever the price.  Also tonight, the new Mr and Mrs Barlow are off to Bali on honeymoon.  But will they be able to get away before Tina tells Carla about one highlight of her wedding reception that won’t appear in any of the photos?
