The Indian state of Gujarat forms the vibrant backdrop for this Shakespearian romance.
Layabout Ram is the charming ‘Romeo’ of his village and the beautiful Leela is the free spirited ‘Juliet’.
Ram is part of the Jadejas clan whilst Leela belongs to the Rabaris.
The only thing in common between these two strangers is their families’ hatred for each other.
But cheeky Ram soon sneaks into Leela’s house for a romantic liaison and they fall in love.
They then decide to elope but their whereabouts are quickly traced.
The couple are brought back to the village to face the wrath of the two feuding families.
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali once again delivers an opulent masterpiece that also has a different twist to this tragic love story.
This is a visual treat, full of grandeur with well-defined characters.
Bhansali typically pays meticulous attention to detail when it comes to the musical score, sets and technicalities giving rise to a masterful work of art.
But the highlight of the film is its colourful and exotic dance sequences celebrating the holy festival dedicated to the worship of Hindu deity Durga.
The scorching chemistry between Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh forms the backbone for this timeless Shakespearean tale.
Deepika’s popularity seems to increase with every release. Here she mesmerises audiences with her sheer beauty and grace as the feisty Leela.
In what is most probably her career-best performance, Deepika wins you over with her acting and dancing prowess.
Ranveer is a revelation too as the village Romeo flaunting his chiselled torso.
He looks confident as the horny Ram exhibiting a range of emotions as he faces up to the perilous circumstances.
Of the supporting cast, Pathak’s intimidating eyes and hostile behaviour stand out from the rest of the stars.
Like most Bhansali’s films this one is a work of art from a master craftsman.
And it will even be worth second helpings at the cinema!
