This entire movie is a car chase and Ethan Hawke is your ex-racing driver at the wheel.

At the end of the line controlling him is The Voice, played by the chin of veteran actor Jon Voight.

Hawke’s Brent Magna is a NASCAR racer who will have to keep doing what he’s told or his kidnapped wife Leanne (Rebecca Budig) will be killed.

Oh, and there’s Selena Gomez as The Kid, a young woman who somehow ends up in the passenger seat literally hanging on for grim death.

Imagine Phone Booth crossed with Speed, Taken, Drive and Bullit...

And that if Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson was a film director taking a busman’s holiday in Bulgaria, this would have his name all over it.

The car, a Shelby Super Snake Mustang, has more cameras on board than a Sky football match.

It’s also been given an armoured coating – which is why it takes forever to pick up a single scratch.

But that’s all part of the twisted fun in the mind of male film director Courtney Solomon (An American Haunting).

If you want to see a film make any kind of sense – or at least not to profit from attacking scores of others with a high-speed vehicle on the assumption you might save one person – then run for your life.

If you want to enjoy ‘Getaway’ feeling like you might be a blue bottle that’s about to go ‘splat’ on the windscreen, rev it up.

On that score alone, one extended and seemingly seamless sequence towards the end will be worth your admission – if you haven’t already gone home to make a claim for whiplash.
