The quality of the singing and dancing in this Gershwin musical comedy, set in the hick town of Deadrock, Nevada, is outstanding.

Choreographer Michelle Baker has brought the best out of a cast whose enthusiasm is infectious in a lively show which is thoroughly enjoyable if, perhaps, a shade long.

Leading the way is Richard Ainslie who plays rich playboy Bobby Child, desperate to ditch his job in the family banking business so that he can pursue a career in showbiz.

Ainslie’s tap dancing his particularly impressive, and he forms a perfect link with Kate Rock, playing Polly Baker, the girl he falls for when sent to Deadrock to close the old Gaiety Theatre owned by her father, Everett (Colin Coleman).

Rock acts and sings with supreme confidence in a show blessed with such timeless numbers as Someone to Watch Over Me, Embraceable You, They Can’t Take That Away From Me and I Got Rhythm.

There is a good helping of humour, too, with a lovely scene in which Ainslie, impersonating Broadway theatre boss Bela Zangler, and Greg Yates (the real Zangler) mirror each other’s actions in a drunken sketch.

Sound performances also come from Joasha Jones (Irene Roth) and Lee Williams (Lank Hawkins).

Directed by Tim Jones with Ian Room’s musical direction, Crazy for You dances on to Saturday night May 10.
