One of the biggest supermarkets in Birmingham is looking to help those in need this Christmas.

Tesco, which operates multiple stores across the city and throughout the West Midlands, are looking to make a difference.

The supermarket giant is asking people to give generously as they launch their biggest-ever Neighbourhood Food Collection.

The retailer has teamed up with foodbank charity The Trussell Trust and food redistribution charity FareShare.

Trussell Trust foodbanks in the West Midlands handed out a jaw-dropping 50,000 food packages over the last six months, statistics show.

The trio of groups are behind the collection - and they're aiming to provide at least five million meals to help feed people in need this winter.

Launched in 2012, the scheme is part of Tesco’s ongoing effort to encourage customers to donate long-life food to charity.

It has collected the equivalent of more than 38 million meals which has been donated to people in need by Tesco customers.

Tesco then tops up the customer donations by 20 per cent.

Matt Davies, UK and ROI CEO at Tesco said: “It’s so great to witness the generosity of our customers each time we hold a Neighbourhood Food Collection.

"That’s especially true at Christmas, when the Trussell Trust and FareShare see an increase in demand for the support they provide people who are struggling to make ends meet.

"Together with the 20% top-up provided by Tesco, we’re hoping this collection will go on to help more people in need than ever before."

The collection is aiming to help families and people who are struggling.

Both The Trussell Trust and FareShare see an increase in the need for support during the winter, with the extra cost of heating that comes with the cold weather adding another pressure for families struggling to make ends meet.

For other vulnerable people, it's isolation or the need for greater support services, which has led to a 26 per cent increase in the number of charities signing up to FareShare for food deliveries in the last year.

The big collection event is running from today (December 1) until Saturday, December 3, in all Tesco stores.

To help, all you have to do is find someone in a Tesco store with a collection bucket and trolley and give what can, if you can.

There will be a trolley for long-life food donations as well as a collection bucket for any spare change you can give.
