Two West Midlands politicians have held an ugly public Twitter row over the estimated £220 billion cost of Brexit.

Birmingham MP Jess Phillips (Lab Yardley) called Brexit-supporting UKIP MEP Bill Etheridge "a vile dog whistler".

And Mr Etheridge called Ms Phillips a "moron".

It follows the publication of estimates that Brexit is going to push up the UK's debts by £220 billion.

It includes £78 billion due to an expected post-referendum economic slowdown. Much of the rest is a result of measures taken by the Bank of England in August to avert recession, such as purchasing bonds.

The figure came from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), a watchdog set up by the Treasury.

But some supporters of Brexit have accused the OBR of being anti-Brexit and using the most gloomy predictions it could.

Coun Etheridge, who is also a Dudley councillor and former UKIP leadership candidate, said on Twitter: "The current establishment line seems to be they didn't want Brexit so they are looking for ways to make it fail to prove their point."

Ms Phillips responded by quoting his Tweet and telling her followers: "Brexit predicted to cost UK millions each week, those who pushed it still blaming 'establishment' they're part of for their failings. Do one".

From there it all went downhill. Coun Etheridge said on Twitter: "How pathetic a Birmingham labour MP wants patriots to 'do one' typical of their disgusting attitude to this country and it's citizens".

And he told Ms Phillips: "Typical labour attitude. Tell 52% of the population to 'do one' you're tv appearances do you justice you really are a moron"

But the conversation really turned nasty when Coun Etheridge accused remainers of hating Britain, saying: "The people who need to 'do one' are those who deny a legitimate vote because they hate our country."

Ms Phillips suggested there was a link between accusing people of hating their country and the conviction of far-right terrorist Thomas Mair jailed for the murder of MP Jo Cox.

She told Coun Etheridge: "Accusing me of hating my country you are a vile dog whistler faking to breed fear and win favour. Did you see the news yesterday? #shame"

And she added: "The day after Jo's verdict this UKIP politician accuses me of hating my country for his political ends. WAKE UP".

Coun Etheridge told her: "how low can you stoop? Yet another labour politician politicising a tragic death . Shame on you !"

Ms Phillips replied: "You cannot see the harm you cause by declaring that politicians hate their country. If I have to explain it you will never understand".
