A Birmingham health trust could be bringing in parking charges at two of their hospitals.

A consultation is underway into parking at West Heath Hospital and Moseley Hall Hospital and one of the options on the table is the introduction of fees.

Visitors to Moseley Hall Hospital can currently park for free on the site 24 hours, seven-days-a-week.

But Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, which run the hospital, is reviewing this after emergency services experienced problems with access. Staff and patients have also raised concerns about congestion and parking.

A Trust spokesperson said: “In recent months concerns have been raised about the on-going car parking and emergency vehicle access issues at Moseley Hall Hospital.

“Staff and patients have raised concerns regarding the lack of car parking and congestion issue on the hospital site.

“To this end, we have undertaken a review of all our hospital sites to ensure that we can maintain a safe environment for our patients and staff.

“During February and March, we will be engaging with our patients, staff and the public to consult them on the future car parking arrangements at our hospital sites, both at Moseley Hall Hospital and West Heath Hospital.

“We are committed to ensuring we deliver safe, high quality care, and that access to the hospital is maintained 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

The hospital, which is close to Moseley Village off Alcester Road, offers general medical and sub-acute care and specialist stroke and brain injury rehabilitation services for both inpatients and outpatients. The site has 247 car parking spaces, with 12 disabled spots.

The site is also home to the Juniper Centre, a mental health facility, which is managed by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust.

The move could also put a strain on local roads near the village where free parking is scarce. Double yellow lines are also due to be painted on some sections of Alcester Road, with the introduction of cycle lanes.

Last year, it was revealed that the Heart of England NHS Trust , which includes Heartlands in Birmingham, Good Hope, in Sutton Coldfield and Solihull Hospital.

It has collected £3.41 million in 2014/15 from parking charges.

Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, which covers City Hospital in Birmingham and Sandwell Hospital, has raised £2.18 million.
