Jo Brand to receive honorary degree from Birmingham university

Comedienne will be recognised later this month by Birmingham City University her work raising awareness surrounding mental health issues

Jo Brand will received an honorary degree from Birmingham City University later this month

BAFTA award-winning comedienne Jo Brand is to receive an honorary doctoral degree from Birmingham City University for her work in raising awareness around mental health.

With a successful career spanning over 25 years, Brand has entertained a whole host of audiences and featured on television programmes such as QI , Have I Got News For You and most recently The Great British Bake Off - An Extra Slice.

However, comedy wasn't her original career choice and prior to this she trained and worked as a mental health nurse.

She continues to raise awareness around mental health issues and is a keen supporter of a range of charities which earned her the Third Sector Award for Celebrity Charity Champion in 2014.

The comedienne said: "I'm delighted to receive an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University and I do thank the university for this recognition. Birmingham is one of my favourite places to perform because the audiences are always so friendly and they laugh a lot!"

She will receive her award on January 12 at the Awards Congregation ceremony, held at Symphony Hall, in Birmingham, which will celebrate the work and achievements of students graduating from the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences.

With a successful career spanning over 25 years, Brand has entertained a whole host of audiences and featured on television programmes such as QI , Have I Got News For You and most recently The Great British Bake Off - An Extra Slice Also receiving honorary awards will be Poundland boss Jim McCarthy, Louise Brooke-Smith, chartered planning and development surveyor, and Anita Bhalla, chairman of Performances at Birmginham Town Hall and Symphony Hall.
