One of the region's most exclusive golf courses faces a six-figure insurance claim after a flash thunderstorm swamped more than 90 bunkers, wrecking the sand.

Little Aston, which lies just off "millionaire's row" Roman Road in Sutton Coldfield, was hit by extreme weather.

Two hours of torrential rain along with thunder and lightning put the bunkers out of action and left course officials with a painstaking clean-up task, which is still under way.

Since the storm, more than a quarter of the bunkers have been restored by the club while the rest were put out to contractors for urgent repair work on the course which charges up to £90 a round in the summer months.

The aftermath of the electric storm left frustrated golfers unable to play out of the bunkers which had been reduced to swollen pits brimming with water after the midsummer downpours.

Club manager Glyn Ridley said: "This was an extreme weather event and we have had to put in an insurance claim.

"There were four to five inches of rain followed by hailstorms and it filled the bunkers up and ruined the sand.

"There was an hour of thunder and lightning and then hailstorms. It has never happened before and was a real shock.

"But it has drained very well - this is an extremely well-draining golf course. The sand has had to be dug out and replaced and that is still ongoing.

"We have 93 bunkers and there were 28 we have had to do ourselves and the rest went out to contractors.

"It has completely ruined the whole of the sand, the bunkers are out of play. We are getting them back in play and that is a constant process."

Mr Ridley said the course had not shut down at any stage despite the devastation.

He declined to provide details of the insurance claim but it is understood to be a six-figure sum.

The course measures 6,813 yards, and has over the years hosted many major tournaments both amateur and professional, including the English Amateur, Brabazon and British Boys Championships.

It was founded in 1908 and insists on an exclusive clientele - jackets and ties must be worn in the bar and dining room after 11.30am, and jeans are completely banned anywhere on the premises.
